SHADYSIDE LOCAL SCHOOL DISTRICT
John Haswell, Superintendent
My name is John Haswell and my personal mission is to provide a safe, respectful, and positive learning environment where staff and students feel comfortable coming to school everyday. I am very excited to be the leader of our great school district. I pledge to spend the remainder of my professional career serving the students of our district. As a life-long member of this community, as well as a 1983 graduate of Shadyside High School, I have first hand knowledge of the pride this community has in our school district. I know the pride I have being an alumnus of our school.
School year 20/21 will be a challenge for everyone of us. Our District Personnel have spent the entire summer planning for how we can return to school in the fall as safely as possible. The Belmont County Superintendents have been working with the Belmont County Health Department Officials to work hand and hand for our return to school plan. Specific District and Building Plans can be accessed at shadysideschools.com
The Board of Education and administration have made a commitment to purchase over $60,000 dollars worth of sanitizing materials that include the following:
*Touch less hand sanitizers in every classroom and entrance in our district.
* Spray bottles with disinfectant in every classroom to sanitize desks in-between class changes.
* Five Battery operated Electro-static machines and sanitizer for deep sanitizing daily. The three buildings, Field house, and Bus garage have this machine.
* Custodial plans that include cleaning restrooms every 15 minutes throughout the school day. The electrostatic machines will be utilized before and after school to deep clean each building.
* Buses will be sanitized after the morning and afternoon routes.
* Purchased masks for every student and staff member in the district.
* Purchased a face shield for every staff member in the district.
* Purchased gloves for staff.
* Plexiglass shields will be installed in each office.
The District will have four new staff members beginning the 2020//2021 School Year. Michael Murphy Band/Music at Leona and the High School, Brianne Roseberry Speech, Alisha Walker part time custodian at Jefferson, and Allison Pacifico Jefferson office aide. We also have several staff members that have moved to a different positions which include:Tom Duncan Maintenance/Transportation/Custodial Supervisor, Michele Milhoan High School secretary, Amber Crozier, Full-time custodian at Leona, Terry Gilham Full time Mechanic/Maintenance, Heidi McConn TAG/Title.
The Board of Education and Administration have also purchased a Chromebook for every student and teacher in the district. This $300,000 dollar investment comes at an opportune time with remote learning a real possibility for the upcoming school year. Our goal is to have everyone using the same machine and learning platform, (Google Classroom) to help eliminate confusion moving forward. We anticipate the devices will be deliver in early September.
We have also partnered with the Shadyside Boosters Turf Committee to install artificial turf in at Fleming field. The field upgrade will allow many different organizations use of this facility. This project was made possible by using oil and gas funds as well as private donations rom Businesses and individuals.
It is my goal to continue to partner with the community and make Shadyside Schools as successful as possible. Please do not hesitate to contact my office if you have a comment, suggestion or concern.
Thank you,
John Haswell, Superintendent
